Fresh off the Wildcats’ upset win over Tennessee, Kentucky head football coach Joker Phillips joins the “star-studded list” of those receiving an ESPN College Football Nation Blog “helmet sticker” for week thirteen of the 2011 regular college football season.
The fictitious stickers (in this case) are awarded for extraordinary achievement. Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes was the first to award actual helmet stickers (1967) for individual player contributions. The eye-catching and coveted helmet stickers, worn prominently on a players actual football helmet, are more than a simple nod of recognition. Today, they are a time-honored tradition for twenty-two Division I FBS teams.
Earlier this season, Junior tailback CoShik Williams was one of five Southeastern Conference players who were also selected for an “SEC Helmet Sticker” by Chris Low, SEC beat writer for ESPN.com, for recognition of his performance against Jacksonville State in October.
Losing is never fun. But for some, it’s painful and perhaps permanently scarring. A writer at the Web site Nooga.com describes the Kentucky football program as “lowly Kentucky” referring to Tennessee’s loss on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington.
Where’s the love? The reference is insightful as to how many around the sports world really feel about UK’s football program. When a rival considers a loss to you as a “catastrophe,” perhaps it is not actually a rivalry after all. But no doubt about it, it’s personal.
The Web site Vols in the Fall‘s reaction to Saturday’s Kentucky victory over Tennessee at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington was to sum it up as “the bottom of the beer barrel” for Tennessee. Clearly, on the morning after the biggest win in Kentucky Football history in many years, UT fans aren’t feeling very Big Orange. They’re seeing red and feeling blue!
