ESPN Analyst Doug Gottlieb trashes Kentucky football

ESPN Analyst Doug Gottlieb.

ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb lobbed a curiously cheap shot at UK football and at former Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzon earlier this evening on Twitter. In a tweet apparently in reference to tonight’s Steelers/Chiefs game broadcast on NBC’s Sunday Night Football, Gottlieb tweeted: “Big Ben least athletic looking athletic QB of all time? Or still Lorenzen

He followed that tweet with: “Lorenzen was the Pilsbury [sic] Throw Boy, in nickname alone,he wins.

In reply to Gottlieb’s tweets, another Twitter user, @PeytonsHead, responded, “Lorenzen was in the SEC…DON’T BAD MOUTH THE SEC!”

Not willing to let it go, Gottlieb fired back, “He was at Kentucky, barely SEC football.

Gottlieb tweet.

Some might find it interesting that Gottlieb, host of ESPN Radio’s The Doug Gottlieb Show, and a former basketball player at Notre Dame, would take such a cheap shot at anyone. During his freshman year, Gottlieb was charged with felony theft for allegedly using stolen credit cards to purchase nearly $1,000 of merchandise.

Gottlieb allegedly stole the credit cards from a roommate and fraudulently charged to the cards. He was later expelled from the team and eventually convicted of misdemeanor fraud. He played point guard for Eddie Sutton and the Oklahoma State Cowboys in 1999-2000.

Perhaps Gottlieb was merely trying to be funny with his tweets. He certainly isn’t the first to dismiss Kentucky football–and he is assuredly won’t be the last. Lorenzen has also no doubt heard all of the fat jokes before. So, no harm, no foul.

Just another pinhead “personality” popping off on Twitter.

Or in Gottlieb’s case, just another twit tweeting tiresome and tedious twaddle.

Rocky Stopped. Dressing from success.

"Rocky Stopped" T-Shirt from Wildcat Wearhouse.

Soon after Kentucky’s improbable and amazing victory over Tennessee at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington on Saturday, Wildcat Wearhouse, a local Lexington t-shirt retailer who specializes in Kentucky sports-themed apparel was cranking out their “Rocky Stopped” t-shirts in an effort to capitalize in the unbridled euphoria in the Bluegrass state.

As UK fans have waited to celebrate a win over the Vols since 1984, it is probably safe to assume the Wildcat Wearhouse will sell quite a few of the $16.99 t-shirts—and they will most likely have a lot of competition from other retailers throughout Kentucky who will also be eager to cash in on Kentucky’s success on the SEC gridiron on Seniors Day.

In this case, it is safe to say that Kentucky’s win fits to a T.

Was that the worst Tennessee team ever?

Amy Smotherman Burgess / News Sentinel Photo

In case you attended or watched yesterday’s historic Tennessee versus Kentucky SEC battle at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington on Saturday, and was wondering if you were watching the “worst” Tennessee team in history, the answer is no. At least according to the Web site GoVolsExtra.

What you saw was the third-worst Tennessee team in the school’s history, according to site writer John Adams.

“The 1906 and 1909 teams were worse. They both went 1-6-2 and didn’t score in 15 games combined,” notes Adam in his current column.

Oh. Okay. Thanks for clearing that up.

If you searched the Commonwealth from Pikeville to Paducah today you probably couldn’t find a Kentucky football fan who cares one iota whether that was the third-worst, or even the worst Tennessee team that trotted off the field in Lexington yesterday with their tail tucked between their collective legs. All that really matters is Kentucky won. Albeit won ugly. But in the history books of Kentucky football it will go down as one of the most unlikely and most satisfying wins ever.

Long live the new streak of Kentucky over Tennessee. 1-0. It’s a start.

DickieV believes Joker Phillips is one of the “happiest dudes in sports today”

Iconic sports personality Dick Vitale posted on Twitter earlier this afternoon that Kentucky football head coach Joker Phillips is one of four of “the happiest dudes in sports today.”

After yesterday’s historic win over Tennessee, who could argue?

When fans are calling for your head, one fast way to quiet them down is to win. And when that win is over your arch rival Tennessee–a team your program hasn’t defeated in twenty six games–“happy” is probably an understatement.

“…lowly Kentucky”

Losing is never fun. But for some, it’s painful and perhaps permanently scarring. A writer at the Web site Nooga.com describes the Kentucky football program as “lowly Kentucky” referring to Tennessee’s loss on Saturday at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington.

Where’s the love? The reference is insightful as to how many around the sports world really feel about UK’s football program. When a rival considers a loss to you as a “catastrophe,” perhaps it is not actually a rivalry after all. But no doubt about it, it’s personal.
