ESPN’s SEC Blog writer Chris Low’s post from Saturday notes that the folks from Tennessee feel as if they’ve now hit rock bottom. The loss to Kentucky at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington was apparently the icing on the cake.
“Sobering,” “embarrassing,” and “pain” describe the feelings that flood forth after a loss to Kentucky in football.
Oh, the humanity…
Soon after Kentucky’s improbable and amazing victory over Tennessee at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington on Saturday, Wildcat Wearhouse, a local Lexington t-shirt retailer who specializes in Kentucky sports-themed apparel was cranking out their “Rocky Stopped” t-shirts in an effort to capitalize in the unbridled euphoria in the Bluegrass state.
As UK fans have waited to celebrate a win over the Vols since 1984, it is probably safe to assume the Wildcat Wearhouse will sell quite a few of the $16.99 t-shirts—and they will most likely have a lot of competition from other retailers throughout Kentucky who will also be eager to cash in on Kentucky’s success on the SEC gridiron on Seniors Day.
In this case, it is safe to say that Kentucky’s win fits to a T.
In case you attended or watched yesterday’s historic Tennessee versus Kentucky SEC battle at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington on Saturday, and was wondering if you were watching the “worst” Tennessee team in history, the answer is no. At least according to the Web site GoVolsExtra.
What you saw was the third-worst Tennessee team in the school’s history, according to site writer John Adams.
“The 1906 and 1909 teams were worse. They both went 1-6-2 and didn’t score in 15 games combined,” notes Adam in his current column.
Oh. Okay. Thanks for clearing that up.
If you searched the Commonwealth from Pikeville to Paducah today you probably couldn’t find a Kentucky football fan who cares one iota whether that was the third-worst, or even the worst Tennessee team that trotted off the field in Lexington yesterday with their tail tucked between their collective legs. All that really matters is Kentucky won. Albeit won ugly. But in the history books of Kentucky football it will go down as one of the most unlikely and most satisfying wins ever.
Long live the new streak of Kentucky over Tennessee. 1-0. It’s a start.
The Web site Vols in the Fall‘s reaction to Saturday’s Kentucky victory over Tennessee at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington was to sum it up as “the bottom of the beer barrel” for Tennessee. Clearly, on the morning after the biggest win in Kentucky Football history in many years, UT fans aren’t feeling very Big Orange. They’re seeing red and feeling blue!
